 Baptism in the Holy Spirit

  1. THE LAST WORDS OF JESUS, LUK 24:46-49; ACT 1:4,5,8.
    Before He went up to heaven, Christ's Last Words to His disciples were: Go and preach the gospel to all nations; and wait until you are endued with power from on High.

  2. THE PROMISE, LUK 24:49; ACT 1:4,5
    The Lord Jesus commanded His disciples to receive the PROMISE of the Father. This promise is the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Through this baptism they will receive power to be His witnesses.

  3. BAPTISM EXPLAINED
    1. The word baptism is taken from the Greek word `baptizo' which means to be immersed. The thing immersed is filled inside and surrounded outside by the liquid (Visual aid: sponge immersed in a glass of water). The Christian who is baptized in the Holy Spirit is filled inside and sur­rounded outside with the Holy Spirit. He receives power.
    2. The word power in ACT 1:8 is taken from the Greek word `dunamis' from which we get the English words dynamite and dynamo. The baptism in the Holy Spirit enables the Christian to receive `dynamite' and `dynamo' power from God.

  4. POWER FOR WITNESSING, ACT 1:8
    The baptism in the Holy Spirit is given to the Christian so that he can be a witness of Jesus. To witness means to be a martyr. The word witne­ss in Acts 1:8 was taken from the Greek word ` martus' which means martyr.

  5. ALL WERE FILLED, ACT 2:1-4
    All Christians (about 120 in ACT 1:15) who waited for the Promise of the Father were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  6. SPEAKING IN TONGUES, I CO 12:10
    Speaking in tongues is the initial evidence that you are baptized in the Holy Spirit. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit given to the believer for the following reasons:
    1. As a prayer language - through this prayer language, the Holy Spirit helps us in our weaknesses and enables us to pray according to the will of God, ROM 8:26-27.
    2. To edify ourselves - when we speak in tongues, we are strengthened, 1CO 14:4.

  7. HINDRANCE OF FEAR, LUK 11:10-13
    Some believers are hindered from being baptized in the Holy Spirit because of fear. The Lord assures us that if we ask the Father of the Holy Spirit, then He will surely give us the Holy Spirit, not any other spirit.

  8. HOW TO RECEIVE THE BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT
    1. Ask - ask the Father,
    2. Receive and give thanks - God has already promised the Holy Spirit. After you asked, then receive. So give thanks and begin praising God.
    3. Speak in tongues - you will be able to speak in tongues because this is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Open your mouth and speak. The gift of tongues will just come out of your mouth as you speak out in faith.
