JOB DESCRIPTION of Intern FD Director |
SOS' continuing ministry requires continuing reproduction of Leaders, especially
for the position of the Field Director. Internship program is a very simple
learning, equipping and empowering experience, using the "Tell-Me, Show-Me,
Let-Me" Method.
MENTORING - is a non-formal, informal training, a practical tutorial, where
mentor transfers his motivation, message, and ministry skills to his mentee
over a period of time. Therefore, the job of an intern FD cannot be described
in terms of rules or steps. By understanding the principles of mentoring, the
Intern FD will know the role he has to play in the church planting work.
| PRINCIPLES TO BE OBSERVED BY MENTORING FIELD DIRECTOR | CORRESPONDING TASK OF INTERN FIELD DIRECTOR |
| 1. INTEGRATION. You incorporate your mentee in the work you are already doing. Participation makes mentoring possible. Give place for them in your work. Don't give them work you do not want to do yourself. | Get involved in everything that the FD does. Participate in every way possible in all his activities: planning, conducting meetings, implementing the strategy, etc. |
| 2. IMPARTATION. Share knowledge or "trade secrets". Don't just discuss theory; show how it is done and why it is done the way it is. Share insights and perspective about the work, treating them as colleagues, and remembering that if he is fully trained, he will be like you. Part of this principle is the impartation of a spiritual gift, through prophesying and laying on of hands. | Learn not only what and how to do it, but understand why it is done the way it is. This is wisdom. Be like a sponge that is ready to absorb all that the FD imparts. Catch his vision, his motivation and perspective of doing things. |
| 3. EDIFICATION. Build their self-esteem and self confidence. Believe in them, in what they are doing, that they will eventually succeed. Keep good thoughts about them and tell them. Praise them in every opportunity, giving them a taste of satisfaction in their work. Remember: the end is better than the beginning. ECC 7:8. | Believe also in yourself. Do not hesitate to start doing new things the FD tells you to do. Give room for mistakes. Do not expect that you'll perfect the work at the start. Trust the sincerity of the FD when he praises you. Remember, he is there for you. |
| 4. FRIENDSHIP. Mentoring is neither a position nor a job description. It is a friendly relationship. Create an environment of freedom to talk where the mentee is not threatened because you give assurance of acceptance. Talk about real feelings, real disappointments, real stress, real conflict, real fears, real aspirations. | Relax as you work with your FD. He is your friend. Involve in fruitful conversation with him. Be willing to share your real feelings especially with regards to your role as intern. Don't be ashamed to admit fears and difficulties. Learn how he overcame them. |
| 5. CONSULTANCY. Be open any time for consultation. Regular communication must be established so that the mentee can always comeback for review, advice, prayer, and burden sharing. | When in doubt, ask. Ask for FD's feedback on your performance and his advice how you can improve. Ask what/where you did right and what/where you did wrong. |
| 6. CONFRONTATION. Confront negative attitudes and unbecoming behaviors. Find an appropriate way of dealing with inappropriate behavior. Use diplomacy and tact; you would not add to the trouble you are trying to resolve. You don't want your mentees to develop negative work habits and attitudes. So bring it up on the first instance. | Accept corrections from FD. He may point out attitudes, and habits that are counterproductive to the ministry - ask his counsel as to how you can improve yourself in these areas. |
| 7. STANDARDIZATION. Set high perfor- mance expectations. Don't relax standards for trainees. Inspire them to pursue excellence. Set an example of a high standard of performance and insist that people maintain these standards. Remember: your goal is to produce experts and high caliber leaders in the ministry. Quality ultimately produces more results. | Remember that SOS has standards which the FD seek to reach and implement. Work with him with the same motivation and pursuit. Don't attempt in any to lower or change the standards. Seek to learn with the FD how he implement the standard procedures, methods, principles spelled out for SOS work. |
| 8. DEMONSTRATION. Teach by example. Let them see and watch, then let them try doing it. Build competence and confidence by giving a nice experience of doing it themselves. Ask: "What did you see me do? What would you have done in the same situation?" | Observe closely how FD do the work. It's one thing to read the SOS manual, it is another thing to see how it is done. Take note of important details. Imagine yourself doing the same soon. |
| 9. PROMOTION. Delegate work and function by promoting your mentee to a project assignment. Giving one piece of work at a time will test faithfulness in little things. Mobilize and put them to usefulness. Recognize and endorse them before the membership. | Readily accept the time when your turn to `do it' comes. Perform the task as you have learned it from the FD. Be confident. |
SUMMARY: The main job of the Intern is to LEARN to be an FD. He should be prepared
to serve as FD the following year.
