PASTOR'S GUIDE THROUGH THE PHASES


II. PHASE 2: EDIFYING

DESCRIPTION: Teaching converts to become responsible covenant members of the local church, building them up into a corporate body for worship and mutual edification, grounding them in the faith, instructing them in sound doctrine and practice based on principles of Christian living.

I. OBJECT OF MINISTRY:
Baptized Covenant members. Converts still being worked on through the conversion process.

II. PASTOR'S MAJOR ROLES:
Pastor, Teacher, Nurturer, Discipler, Counselor, Role Model of a true disciple of Christ.

III. ACTIVITIES/METHODS:

· Class Type Sessions

· Required Instruction for Covenant Membership:

· Responsible membership, Church Concept

· New Life Class: Assurance of Salvation

· Discipleship Classes - Becoming a True Disciple

· Bible Classes - Study of the Bible

· Pastoral Care Ministries: Informal

· Personal Counseling

· Pastoral Round Visits

· Doctrinal Class - Study of Doctrines

· Corrective Measures, Disciplinary Measures Retreats/Seminars:

Small Groups (Assistance of Missions Pastors can be requested)

· Friendship Pairs - facilitate kinning

· Family Altars - mobilize parents

· Prayer Bands - community based

· Cell groups -designed to follow-up application of Sunday messages.

· Interest Groups - to meet specific needs

· Sunday Services with emphases on Christian Growth

· Seminar to Complete Conversion Exp. of Converts

· Retreats - developing Devotional Life

· Christian Life Growth Seminars

· Prayer, Praise and Worship Seminar (Focus on How)

· Deliverance From Strongholds

· Stewardship Seminar

· Auxiliary Meetings: Youth, Men, Women, etc.

· Body Ministry during large meetings

IV. SUNDAY SERVICE AND SERMON EMPHASES:
Sunday Sermons - Series on Christian growth. Give place to body ministry at appropriate times during services.

V. TEACHING CURRICULUM:
Teaching curriculum is suggested by the activities above. Several adaptable teaching materials are in your files of BSM notes, SOS notes and notes conducted in our seminars. Assistance of Missions Pastors can be sought in drawing up curriculum materials for your specific needs.

VI. WORKFORCE NEEDED:

1. Facilitators of small groups meetings

2. Facilitators and committee people for seminars

3. Sunday Service Staff - help pastor prepare Service venue, ushers

4. Records Officer - to check attendance of members

5. Temporary Treasurer

VII. STRUCTURE/ORG:

1. By this time, the following committees/departments are already functional (during Evangelizing Phase)

a. Prayer

b. Evangelism & Follow -Up

c. Records

2. Identify prospect staff for the following (do not assign yet)

a. Praise & Worship

b. Stewardship

c. Discipleship Staff - SS teachers, Bible study leaders, Cell group leaders, as the case maybe.

VIII. TRAINING MATERIALS & SCHEME:
Training scheme of prospect staff in the identified functions above is in observation level and team ministry with you. The Pastor should not too readily release people to do above functions since these are functions that require a degree of maturity. At this point, the pastor will have to maximize his effort in teaching his people and modeling to his prospect workers the functions he wants them to have later on.


IX. NUMERICAL GOAL:

1. At least 80% of the people included as objects of this ministry (see above) are regularly attending and affected growth change through these discipleship activities.

2. At least two people are identified to be trained to function in the above needed committees.

X. TIME FRAME:
6 to 8 months. Starts on the 4th month from onset of ministry. By this time, efforts for the evangelizing phase are more on organizing and training people to take charge of evangelism and follow-up. Concentration on these edifying activities should intensify as the pastor is partially relieved of his evangelizing responsibilities.
